Intervention strategies can range from modifying food and liquid consistencies and teaching compensatory strategies like postural adjustments and swallowing maneuvers, to implementing exercises aimed at strengthening the muscles involved in swallowing and improving sensory awareness. In some cases, especially with people with head and neck cancers, manual techniques are also used to help decrease laryngeal muscle tension and improve tissue mobility. The overarching goal is to enable individuals to eat and drink safely and comfortably, minimizing the risk of aspiration and maximizing their nutritional intake and quality of life. Ongoing evaluation and adjustments to the treatment plan ensure the therapy remains effective and responsive to the individual’s progress.
Dysphagia can range from a minor inconvenience to a severe and life-threatening condition. It can manifest as trouble swallowing solids, liquids, or even one’s own saliva, and may be accompanied by pain (odynophagia), coughing, choking, or a sensation of food getting stuck in the throat or chest. Causes are diverse, encompassing neurological disorders like stroke or Parkinson’s disease, muscle conditions, structural abnormalities such as strictures or tumors, or even inflammation from conditions like GERD. Untreated dysphagia can lead to serious complications including malnutrition, dehydration, and aspiration pneumonia, where food or liquid enters the lungs.
